Speech, Language and Communication continues to develop into the teenage years and it is a time for ‘mastering’ your skills and developing higher level language skills needed for the complex learning and social situations that teenagers face.

Who needs to be involved?

The teenager or young person must want the support and be motivated towards learning new skills and strategies. 

Regular contact with parents must be kept but parents do not need to attend all of a young person’s therapy sessions.  Parental involvement is something that can be negotiated between the therapist, parent and teenager when the therapy first starts. 

At the end of each session the young person will be given ideas, resources and activities to practise to ensure carryover of skills and to increase the effectiveness of the therapy.

Depending on what the young person and parent agrees to, it may be useful for the Speech and Language Therapist to have some contact with school staff and any other key people or professionals involved.
